Abstract
In order to examine the effects of social relationship on mental health of the rural elderly, this study especially focused on testing the differential effects of social support and social negativity on their depressive symptoms. Data from ¡¸Korean Social Life, Health and Aging Project(KSHAP)¡¹ was used for analyzing 569 elderly aged over 60 who were living with spouses. The results showed that both social support and social negativity had statistically significant impact on rural elderly¡¯s depressive symptoms. Furthermore, social negativity showed more influence on depressive symptoms than social support. Both social support and social negativity from spouse had statistically significant effect on depressive symptoms. However, for friends and neighbors, only social negativity showed statistically significant effect on depressive symptoms. Social support and negativity of family members did not have any significant impact. Implications for paying more attention to the quality of social relationships and for fostering more positive relationships within social network of the rural elderly were suggested.
